The Remington 552 Speedmaster offered shooters a semi-auto rimfire rifle that was capable of cycling three types of ammunition depending on the needs of the shooter. At the time it was introduced, the .22 short was the most economical means of target shooting and was far more prevalent than its bigger brothers.
