White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre deflected questions on systemic racism in a recent press conference, instead highlighting the Biden administration’s supposed ‘economic achievements.’ She credited the administration with creating over 13 million jobs, a statement which has been scrutinized due to the nature of these jobs being largely pandemic recovery rather than new positions. She also lauded decreasing inflation rates, sidestepping warnings from economists about the potential inflationary consequences of the American Rescue Plan Act. The conversation later meandered towards racial issues, but Jean-Pierre’s responses left it unclear whether President Biden views America as still inherently racist. This press conference is the latest in a series of instances where Democrats have spotlighted economic progress while skirting around harder, more sensitive questions.
